Projects

Karama currently runs a project to revive traditional Egyptian inlay craft. We work on multiple tracks to achieve our goals, we empower existing artisans through building their capacity by training them on business and technical skills that would enhance their quality of life. In addition, we provide them with new and creative designs developed by renowned designers to enable them to access new markets. Moreover, we work on transmitting the crafts’ know-how through training new generation of inlay artisans selected from different communities, including women and people with disabilities, by experienced inlay craftsmen. We successfully delivered two building capacity workshops for existing artisans, trained 8 social workers on inlay, and our first group of the new generation of inlay artisans graduated and they are planning to continue with the training in. In addition, we succeeded in prototyping 13 new inlay designs. Moreover, we launched our website to start the marketing phase and created our blog to raise awareness about the craft at risk and artisans distinguish work. Through the project, Karama was able to provide technical and/ financial support to total number of 18 workshops. We are focusing our efforts on continuing with the production and promotion of inlay products to open new markets for the artisans. Consequently, this will lead to raise their income, in addition to train 20 youth from vocational schools on the inlay craft. During the project, one of the biggest challenge was the poor quality of inlay products and prototypes. There were serious quality problems in the finishing of the wood due to poor quality standards. Hence, the final inlay products were poorly executed, and had several visible defaults for the eye. Thus, so we focused our efforts in enhancing the quality of the products by building the artisans capacity on quality standards and finishing by an expert. We also hired a quality control consultant to regularly control the quality of every produced prototype in each step of the process. In addition, the continuous follow up from our production coordinator. Gender equality, inclusion, and participatory approach were mainstreamed during the process of the project implementation.
